Sizing explainedSome of our contributors provide sizing information for the guidance of buyers. You should discuss details with contributors should you wish to be sure of what you are buying. Two elements are relevant, the maximum size for which an image is available, and the size which you require to be delivered. For digital delivery, the maximum size (in terms of image area) which may be available depends on the method of capture and, for negatives or transparencies, the resolution at which they are scanned. (Although quoted in megapixels, this does not mean that the image was captured with a digital camera). In terms of the size you require to be delivered, the table below is illustrative only and assume highest quality magazine printing at 150lpi (300 dpi):
For example - when you buy a maximum size three image at size three, you will obtain a copy of the full size digital file ie between 22MB and 35MB. You may buy the same image for less at sizes four and five - they are delivered at smaller sizes. By printing at different resolutions, different sizes can be obtained. For consistency, pricing is connected to the digital filesize required for delivery as measured in pixels. In complex areas, agreement on the price can be reached with the photographer. We encourage you to take deliveries in minimum compression JPG format in order to make delivery more reliable and convenient, avoiding the longer download and upload times associated with TIFFs. Some images are only available in this format. Upsizing of digital files It is worth noting that software 'enlargement' of digital files is now considered perfectly acceptable by many buyers and produces results equal or better to those produced from 35mm film. At the higher end, it is equal or better to medium format. Accordingly many online agencies now demand that their contributors provide upsized images. Contributors to Photoconnect are aware that there is a limit to which digital files can be successfully enlarged. Our guidance is that, with the right software, a doubling in size can be achieved. That is how contributors to this site arrive at the maximum size stated above. Whatever size you purchase, unless agreed with the photographer, it is expressly forbidden for you to upsize images. |
